Naked Writing

sometimes I do this thing..

where I write out line of a song I like and then keep writing until I stop to jump start myself. I guess I’ve been listening to a lot of Bon Iver lately and wrote this in my notebook last night:

We said, “Look that one’s yours.”
We pointed down across the coast
White peaks and white crests waiting for the ships to come in
we watied on the widows peaks
like generations of watchers of waiters before us
but we were not widows
nor were we expecting death
Not in this life anyway.

We wanted to run down the steps once we saw it
Your sails crossing one horizon into ours.
We wanted to run in our bare feet to the docks.

We feel the coarse wood on our bare feet now:
the salty spray the cushion of wet sand, the pinch of broken shells.

We ran, not wanting to spill our wine glasses exactly, but run we did.

You were lowering the anchors
We couldn’t stop ourselves from jumping in off the edge of the dock.

Pushing away from the barnacle plastered poles
Our legs tangled in our dresses with the seaweed
Our toes perfectly pointed feet way from a bottomless bottom
We swam out our arms burning but swimming still.
How else would we reach you?

We reached the rope, finally, we reached your ship.
Pulled ourselves up and up, our hands rubbing raw now, but hand over hand,
ankle over ankle, we climbed

Hands on deck,
Dresses dripping
we reached you, wrapped our legs around you.
